Hear stories of 167 men and boys held in just 29 cells, their forced labour in building structures still standing today, and their difficult journeys home. Explore sites like the reformatory and Lomas Cottage, gaining a deeper understanding of this history. Then, take in the beauty of WA’s most stunning island with a unique train ride and a casual lunch at Oliver Hill, the island’s highest point, offering breathtaking views. The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. As the day winds down, gather in the evening for a memorable dinner at Isola Bar e Ristorante, overlooking the ocean and providing the perfect setting to reflect on the day’s experiences.
Day 3. Rottnest Island to Perth (B)
Today we spend the morning touring with coastal views from the military watchtower sink in as the guide draws the crowd to attention with stories from where they stand. Their wealth of knowledge brings to life the tangible reality of the site. Then, explore the Wadjemup Museum, housed in a former granary built by Aboriginal prisoners, where displays spanning 40,000 years share stories of survival, culture and island history. With artefacts, photographs and a moving film by Aboriginal Elders, this experience leaves a lasting impression, connecting past and present in a powerful way.
