View soaring mountains, alpine lakes, lush green valleys and picturesque historic towns on your journey from Victoria’s Gippsland region to Lake Jindabyne in New South Wales. Traverse some of Australia’s most magnificent high country on this fabulous 11-day tour. Visit the historic mountain village of Walhalla, visit the koalas on Raymond Island and tour along the incredible Great Alpine Road. The magnificent rural scenes continue with the autumn colours of Bright and the gold history of Omeo and Beechworth.
Itinerary
Day 1. Perth to Gippsland (D)
We collect you from home for the flight to Melbourne. Upon arrival, we transfer you to Warragul and the comfort of your hotel.
Overnight: Holiday Inn Dandenong.
Day 2. Walhalla Mountain Village (BLD)
Once the heart of one of the most vibrant gold mining districts in the world, Walhalla is both fascinating and picturesque. Ride the Walhalla Goldfields Railway to take in the breathtaking scenery and colours of autumn. Enjoy lunch before going beneath the mountain on a guided tour of the Long Tunnel Extended Mine – Gold Mine. After, wonder around the picturesque little town, visit the Walhalla Museum or the unusual cemetery with wonderful views.
Overnight: Mantra Traralgon.
Day 3. Bairnsdale and Raymond Island (BD)
Today we stop at Bairnsdale and enjoy morning tea on the banks of the Michell River. Take some time to visit the magnificent St Mary’s Catholic Church and wonder the town before continuing on to the coastal town of Paynseville. In the afternoon, take a short 5-minute ferry crossing to Raymond Island where a large, wild koala population lives.
Overnight: Esplanade Hotel, Lakes Entrance.
Day 4. Great Alpine Road (BD)
Journey from the coast to the mountains, view spectacular alpine scenery and sweeping mountain landscapes along one of Australia’s greatest touring routes. Along the way, stop to admire the historic gold rush streets of Omeo, then climb to great heights to Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain before descending into Ovens Valley. Be welcomed by some beautiful country hospitality at the Riverbank Hotel where you can settle in for 3 nights.
Three nights: Riverbank Hotel.
Day 5. Beautiful Bright (BD)
Today you will have free time to wonder the picturesque township of beautiful Bright in all its autumn glory. Indulge in some retail therapy at the gorgeous boutique stores, including the Christmas shop. Enjoy the art gallery and visit Nightingdales, an orchard farm with fresh produce and perhaps a cheeky cider.
Day 6. Mount Beauty (BD)
At Mount Beauty, learn about the first people of the valley, view exhibitions and discover why the huts of the High Plains are so important to Victoria’s heritage. Enjoy exploring the well-preserved buildings and town of Yackandandah, a former gold mining town now classified by the National Trust.
Day 7. Beechworth gold history (BD)
Dive into the history of the gold rush era and explore the well-preserved historic town of Beechworth. Enjoy a guided tour of the Historic and Cultural Precinct, learn about the local honey industry and explore the Old Beechworth Gaol hearing the stories of notorious characters including Ned Kelly.
Overnight: The Grand Oaks Resort, Beechworth.
Day 8. Bonegilla Migrant Centre and an inland submarine in Holbrook (BLD)
Start the day learning about the 300 000 migrants that passed through Bonegilla in the post-war era from 1947 – 1971. It once had its own churches, banks, cinema, hospital and police station. After, enjoy you will see Lake Hume before continuing to an inland Submarine Museum in Holbrook. As we continue north, we will call in and visit the unique Pioneer Women’s Hut to see first-hand the ingenuity of women in early rural Australia.
Overnight: Tumut Valley Motel, Tumut.
Day 9. Snowy Mountains Drive (BD)
Today we journey down the glorious Snowy Mountains Highway from the rolling hills of Tumut to idyllic Cooma. Visit the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre, a fascinating centre celebrating the history, the engineering and the future of the iconic scheme. Spend some time in Cooma before continuing to Lake Jindabyne.
Two nights: Lake Jindabyne Hotel.
Day 10. Thredbo (BLD)
Awake in the refreshing alpine air. There will be morning touring before we make our way to the famous Wildbrumby Schnapps Distillery to enjoy tastings and lunch. Then there is an absolute highlight visiting the Kosciuszko National Park to take in the stunning views from the chairlift at Thredbo.
Day 11. Jindabyne to Canberra (BL)
Bid farewell to the High Country and travel to Canberra. Board your flight to Perth (via Sydney) early in the evening. Upon arrival we will see you safely home.

Designed for travellers with lower mobility who can manage everyday movement independently. You must be able to embark and disembark coaches, trains, and other transport via steps, carry your own luggage, and walk short distances. Stairs may be encountered at times. Walking aids (sticks and walkers) are welcome. Travellers who bring a companion to help provide assistance may find these holidays suitable.

For travellers who walk confidently and unaided. In addition to Relaxed requirements, expect guided walking tours that may include gentle inclines and stair climbs, some longer days, and multiple hotel changes. Access to accommodation may involve stairs, short walks to facilities, and showers over baths. Walking sticks are welcome unless the tour includes overnight rail or cruising—please check with staff.

For travellers comfortable with full sightseeing days. Building on Moderate requirements, these tours feature more activities, extended periods of standing and walking, and nature-based excursions. You must be able to walk confidently over uneven surfaces at a steady pace, and negotiate busy transport terminals. Expect feature walks for up to 3 hours, and activities that may include small aircraft, vehicles, vessels and watercraft. Not suitable for travellers requiring walking aids or assistance from others.

Requires good general fitness. Excursions will be over more difficult terrain and require a certain level of agility. You will be required to walk confidently for up to 3 hours over uneven surfaces including soft sand, rocky surfaces and creek crossing. Some itineraries will explore remote locations. No walkers allowed.

For travellers with a high level of fitness and previous outdoor experience. Building on Highly Active requirements, these tours involve full days of physical activity in remote or rugged locations that may be difficult to access. You must be able to walk confidently for 6 or more hours per day over multiple days while carrying a day pack and be comfortable walking in varied weather conditions. Not suitable for travellers using walking aids or requiring assistance.
