This Goldfields getaway will take you through regional heritage buildings, museums and the historic towns of one of the world’s greatest gold rushes on this five-day holiday through Western Australia’s rugged outback. Follow the route of CY O’Connor’s pipeline on The Prospector train and travel to the historic ghost town of Gwalia. Find lost treasures in the remarkable township of Kalgoorlie and enjoy a tour of the grand Kalgoorlie Town Hall, before boarding your picturesque journey home on board the high-speed Prospector train.
Itinerary
Day 1. The Prospector rail journey to Kalgoorlie (D)
Your holiday begins with courtesy collection from home to the East Perth Terminal to board the high-speed Prospector train, relax on board as the forests of the Darling Escarpment give way to the vast Wheatbelt and rugged scrubland. Speed through directly to Kalgoorlie, where you transfer to your central stay at the Quality Inn Railway Motel. *
Four nights: Quality Inn Railway Motel, Kalgoorlie
Day 2. Golden Mile (BD)
This morning we visit the historic Hannans North Tourist Mine, gaining insight into the region’s rich gold mining history. After, view the famous Philip Goatcher Stage Curtain at the historic Boulder Town Hall, believed to be the last of its kind in the world. Lunch is at leisure in Kalgoorlie before an afternoon of exploration, including a guided Super Pit ** tour to witness the scale of Australia’s largest open-cut gold mine, followed by a town tour highlighting Kalgoorlie’s heritage and charm.
Day 3. Kalgoorlie and surrounds (BLD)
Today begins with a visit to the Museum of the Goldfields, where you can step back into the heady days of the gold rush and explore the region’s rich mining history. Lunch follows at the iconic Kalgoorlie Hotel, after which we visit the intriguing Questa Casa Bordello, one of the world’s oldest operating brothels. Then it’s on to the grand Kalgoorlie Town Hall, a true landmark of the region’s heritage.
Day 4. Golden Quest Discovery Trail (BLD)
This morning, we will explore part of the Golden Quest Discovery Trail. The trail runs 965km from Coolgardie to Laverton. Along the way, there are classic pubs, changing landscapes, nature reserves and campsites. We will stop in at Menzies for morning tea and then make our way to the preserved ghost town of Gwalia. Here we’ll tour the historic precinct and the house that was commissioned by Herbert Hoover, before commencing our journey back to Kalgoorlie.
Day 5. The Prospector train journey to Perth (BL)
Awaken for an early breakfast before we board the Prospector train to experience part of Western Australia’s rail heritage on your return journey to Perth. Upon arrival at the East Perth Terminal, you will be met by a courtesy small charter vehicle and delivered home.
* Please note the Quality Inn Railway Motel is a two-story property, ground floor rooms cannot be guaranteed.
** Please note as you will be going to an operating mine site you have to abide by these requirements. All tour participants must be wearing the MANDATORY clothing – Sturdy fully enclosed shoes with socks, which must completely cover the foot, enclosing the whole top of the foot, long sleeves to the wrist, and long pants to the ankles. The only acceptable skin that can be exposed is that of the head and hands.

Designed for travellers with lower mobility who can manage everyday movement independently. You must be able to embark and disembark coaches, trains, and other transport via steps, carry your own luggage, and walk short distances. Stairs may be encountered at times. Walking aids (sticks and walkers) are welcome. Travellers who bring a companion to help provide assistance may find these holidays suitable.

For travellers who walk confidently and unaided. In addition to Relaxed requirements, expect guided walking tours that may include gentle inclines and stair climbs, some longer days, and multiple hotel changes. Access to accommodation may involve stairs, short walks to facilities, and showers over baths. Walking sticks are welcome unless the tour includes overnight rail or cruising—please check with staff.

For travellers comfortable with full sightseeing days. Building on Moderate requirements, these tours feature more activities, extended periods of standing and walking, and nature-based excursions. You must be able to walk confidently over uneven surfaces at a steady pace, and negotiate busy transport terminals. Expect feature walks for up to 3 hours, and activities that may include small aircraft, vehicles, vessels and watercraft. Not suitable for travellers requiring walking aids or assistance from others.

Requires good general fitness. Excursions will be over more difficult terrain and require a certain level of agility. You will be required to walk confidently for up to 3 hours over uneven surfaces including soft sand, rocky surfaces and creek crossing. Some itineraries will explore remote locations. Building on Highly Active requirements, these tours involve full days of physical activity in remote or rugged locations that may be difficult to access. You must be able to walk confidently for 6 or more hours per day over multiple days while carrying a day pack and be comfortable walking in varied weather conditions. Not suitable for travellers using walking aids or requiring assistance.
