Awe inspiring outback of Australia including a scenic flight over Lake Eyre

This 4WD coach journey will take you into the spectacular Flinders Ranges and South Australia’s awe-inspiring outback where magnificent mountains, glowing sunsets, gnarly gum trees, waterholes and gorges and vast ancient and dramatic landscapes will be at every turn. Discover the mind boggling 1.5-million-year geological rock formations from sunrise to sunset. Witness the sheer beauty and expanse of the Lake Eyre salt pan by air and go underground in Coober Pedy.
Itinerary
Day 1. Perth to Adelaide (D)
Your outback adventure begins with courtesy home collection and transfer to the Perth Airport for your flight to South Australia. Upon arrival in Adelaide, we will transfer you to your hotel to settle in to a welcome dinner with your fellow travellers.
Overnight: Hotel/Motel Adelaide
Day 2. Clare Valley to Wilpena Panorama (BD)
Travel north by 4WD coach from Adelaide into the picturesque Clare Valley, one of Australia’s premier wine regions. Visit the historic Knappstein Winery, established in 1878, and enjoy a tasting of its acclaimed wines at the cellar door, where generations of winemaking tradition are reflected in every glass. Afterwards, enjoy lunch in the charming township of Clare, renowned for its heritage buildings and relaxed country atmosphere. It’s the best way to ease into the wide-open, otherworldly spaces of the Flinders Ranges – your commute is a short journey by coach, but it transports you to seemingly Martian landscapes, some 800 million years in the making and home to the Adnyamathanha people for tens of thousands of years. Settle into your accommodation at Wilpena Pound. The Indigenous community owns and manages your base for the night, Wilpena Pound Resort, and they’ll welcome you with spirit and so
Overnight: Wilpena Pound Resort
Day 3. Wilpena Pound to Arkaroola (BD)
Start the day watching the sun rise over the red rocks from Wangara Lookout. From this awe-inspiring vantage, you’ll enjoy expansive views over the natural amphitheatre that is Wilpena Pound, before your journey carves north through dramatic gorges. Keep your eyes peeled for endangered yellow-footed rock wallabies – only 2,250 remain in Australia and most call this part of the country home. You’ll begin to understand why they favour the South Australian outback when you arrive in Arkaroola, characterised by ancient granite mountains and golden spinifex covered hillsides that provide a view over Lake Frome and the desert beyond. But the real stars here are those overhead, as you’ll discover on an astronomy tour that brings the dazzling night sky into full focus. Prepare to be humbled – in the best possible way.
Overnight: Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary
Day 4. Arkaroola to Marree (BLD)
Learn about the region’s 1.5-billion-year geological history as you navigate the steep 4WD slopes of the Ridgetop Track. Plants here are found nowhere else on the planet and the gorges are vast and impressive. Continue northwest to the Ochre Pits outside of Lyndhurst, it is as sacred as it is spectacular, with the Indigenous community having utilised the rich clay soil in ceremonies for centuries. See why this part of Australia was attractive to the 1800’s settlers of nearby Farine and learn why they departed, leaving an eerie ghost town on the outskirts of Marree.
Overnight: Marree Hotel
Day 5. Marree to Coober Pedy with a scenic flight over Lake Eyre (B)
Much of South Australia’s outback owes its existence to the Old Ghan Railway, navigating between Darwin and Adelaide. Journey along the Oodnadatta Track to experience the layered history, while glimpsing the natural spectacle of Kati Thanda – Lake Eyre, Australia’s largest inland lake. It is a vast shimmering salt pan that can be transformed into a vibrant wilderness with rainfall. A highlight will be a bird’s eye view with a scenic flight which also passes over the Anna Creek Painted Hills, a striking rocky outcrop bursting from the flat dessert. You will touch down to explore the terrain before continuing to Coober Pedy which is known for the opal mining and underground homes.
Two nights: Desert Cave hotel
Day 5. Geraldton to Perth – Farewell to the Coral Coast (BL)
Begin the journey home along the coast with morning tea in Jurien Bay, keeping an eye out for sea lions. Gather for a farewell lunch at the Endeavour Tavern in Lancelin before continuing to Perth, where you will be taken safely home.
Day 6. Coober Pedy sightseeing (B)
Discover the unique life of living underground in this outback community. Try fossicking for opals and experience Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, where you travel along a stretch of the Dog Fence, a barrier spanning over 5000 km’s over 3 states. The area is like a moonscape of fossilised shells and cracked grey clay, something to be seen. Swing a club at the local golf club where the fairways, sand and the putting green are oil-soaked. Learn about the region’s history at the Big Winch 360, a circle vision cinematic experience that takes you on a journey along SA’s Explorer’s Way. The show is as big as the outback and as unique as the people that call it home.
Day 7. Coober Pedy to Port Augustus (BD)
The landscape continues to impress with the isolated saltpan of Lake Hart that sparked a community in the 1930’s. Today, this area is deserted, its isolation the reason this area became the world’s largest military land base in 1947. It has been used as a testing base for bombs, ballistic missiles and boosters. It is a piece of Australian history few know of.
Overnight: Majestic Oasis Apartments
Day 8. Port Augusta to the Barossa (BL)
Arguably one of the most well know wine regions of Australia, the Barossa seems a fitting way to complete your outback journey as you make your way back towards the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Visit Lambert Estate for lunch before transferring back to the airport for your journey home.
