The Great Southern Coast
The Great Southern Coast. Where the journey is as magical as the destination
Just a little over two hours south of Perth lies a corner of Western Australia that seems made for slow mornings, long lunches and weekends spent exploring: The Ferguson Valley.
Tucked among rolling green hills, towering jarrah and marri forests, orchards and vineyards, Ferguson Valley is a destination where the journey is every bit as enjoyable as the arrival. With boutique wineries, excellent local produce, scenic drives and plenty of opportunities to simply stop and take it all in, it’s the kind of place that rewards travellers who aren't in a hurry.
A Valley Worth Wandering
The Ferguson Valley sits within the broader Bunbury Geographe region and is known for its picturesque countryside and thriving food and wine scene. The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons, lush and green through winter and spring, golden and sun-drenched through summer and autumn.
One of the best ways to experience the valley is simply to get in the car and follow the winding country roads. Around every bend you’ll find another sweeping view, farm gate, vineyard or inviting place to pull over.
More Than a Food & Wine Destination
While food and wine might put Ferguson Valley on the map, there’s plenty to discover beyond the cellar doors.
The surrounding countryside is perfect for scenic drives, photography and leisurely walks, while nearby forests provide a taste of the region's natural beauty. For those who enjoy getting outdoors, the Ferguson Valley and surrounding Bunbury Geographe area offer opportunities for hiking, cycling and exploring the native landscape.
History and heritage are also woven into the region, with nearby towns and rural communities offering a glimpse into the area's agricultural past.
Whimsical Gnomesville
Within the Ferguson Valley lies Gnomesville, the exact location can be found off the roundabout which links Wellington Mill Road and Ferguson Road. It is one of those wonderfully quirky places that sparks curiosity and has captured the imagination of visitors from around the world.
What started as a collection of small garden ornaments may seem like a bit of fun, but there’s an intriguing mystery behind how this unusual community came to be.
No one seems to know the exact story of Gnomesville’s beginnings and over the years, several tales have emerged. One popular version suggests that a single gnome mysteriously appeared, prompting others to bring along their own gnomes so the original wouldn’t be left all alone.
Another story has it that local workmen created a playful cricket scene using gnomes on the roundabout, simply for a bit of fun. Whatever the true story, the gnomes have certainly multiplied over the years!
Today, Gnomesville is a fascinating and delightfully eccentric stop in Ferguson Valley, where visitors can wander among thousands of gnomes, discover the quirky scenes they’ve created and perhaps even leave a little gnome of their own.
The Beauty Is in the Details
Perhaps what makes Ferguson Valley so memorable isn't one particular attraction. It's the combination of little moments.
It's the road winding through the trees. The view from a vineyard. The taste of fresh local produce. The friendly welcome at a cellar door. The feeling of having nowhere else you need to be.
Ferguson Valley invites you to slow down, look around and enjoy Western Australia at a gentler pace.
