Every first Sunday in May, the charming heritage town of Toodyay in WA's Avon Valley transforms into something truly magical - a raucous, rollicking celebration of one of Western Australia's most colourful characters: Moondyne Joe . The Moondyne Festival is a free, family-friendly, all-day event that fills Stirling Terrace with street theatre, colonial villages, artisan markets, live music and enough historical shenanigans to keep you grinning from ear to ear.

Whether you're cheering on Joe's gang as they rob shops, watching the mock trial unfold, or browsing heritage crafts in the colonial village, there is something utterly joyful about this celebration. It all began in the early 1890s

Prospectors struck gold near what is now Kalgoorlie. Almost overnight, the landscape transformed. Makeshift camps grew into thriving towns and a surge of fortune-seekers poured into the region, creating one of the most significant gold rushes in Australian history.

Originally transported for...

Stealing three loaves of bread, bacon and a few cheeses from a house in Wales in 1848 — hardly the stuff of master criminals!

The great escape artist

He became famous not for his crimes, but for escaping from prison over and over again — including busting out of a specially built "escape-proof" cell in Fremantle Prison!

Named after the valley

His nickname came from Moondyne Springs in the Avon Valley, an Aboriginal name for the rugged gorge area where he made his living trapping stray horses.

A governor's bold promise

Governor Hampton reportedly told Joe: "If you get out again, I'll forgive you." Joe escaped through the prison wall in 1867 — and the Governor had to eat his words!

One of his last recaptures happened while he was raiding a wine cellar — a rather civilised way to be caught, we think.

WA's only Welsh bushranger

Born in Wales around 1826, Joe is believed to be Australia's only Welsh bushranger. His grave in Fremantle Cemetery bears the Welsh word for freedom — rhyddid.

Celebrating Community, Connection and

the Joy of Staying Active

Have a Go Day returned to Burswood Park yesterday in another spectacular celebration of active, positive ageing — and what a day it was! Organised each year by the Seniors Recreation Council of Western Australia (SRCWA), the event brings together organisations from across the state that support health, wellbeing, social connection and lifelong learning. With an estimated crowd of over 10,000 visitors, this year’s festival delivered its biggest and liveliest turnout yet.

Villa Carlotta Travel has proudly taken part in Have a Go Day for more than 15 years, and 2025 was no exception. As always, it was a wonderful chance to reconnect with our regular travelers, welcome new faces and introduce people to the world of worry-free, fully hosted holidays.

What is Have a Go Day?

Have a Go Day is SRCWA’s flagship event, created to encourage seniors and over-55s to stay active, engaged and socially connected. The day showcases a huge variety of activities, clubs, demonstrations and community services — all designed to promote healthy ageing.

Visitors could try their hand at everything from tai chi, archery and rowing machines to dancing, bocce, arts and crafts, technology workshops and more. Health services, community groups, lifestyle brands and travel providers set up stalls across the park, giving attendees endless opportunities to explore, participate and “have a go”.

A Full House of Exhibitors

The event brought together an impressive range of stallholders and community organisations. Fitness clubs, hobby groups, volunteer associations, medical services, regional tourism bodies and recreational organisations were all represented. Many demonstrated activities on-site, while others offered information, guidance and resources to help visitors stay active and engaged throughout the year.

The atmosphere was upbeat, energetic and wonderfully inclusive — a true reflection of WA’s vibrant seniors’ community.

During our Robertson Brothers Musical Tour, passengers explored the Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre , where they discovered a fascinating piece of Australian history.

If you think school life was tough for students back in the day, spare a thought for their teachers! In 1872, bush school teachers were expected to follow an extraordinary list of strict and sometimes downright bizarre rules.

From curfews to conduct codes, these early educators lived under regulations that reflected a very different era — and a hard life on the frontier. We thought you might enjoy a glimpse into what it was really like for teachers of the time! ��

Rules for Teachers in 1872

1. Teachers each day will fill lamps, trim the wicks and clean chimneys.

2. Each morning teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the days session.

3. Make your pens carefully. You may whittle nibs to the individual taste od the pupils.

4. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they attend church regularly.

5. After ten hours in school, the teacher may spend the remaining time reading the library or any other good books.

6. Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conducts will be dismissed.

7. Every teacher should lay aside from each pay a goodly sum of his earnings for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not become a burden on society.

8. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber ship will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty.

9. The teacher who performs his labour faithfully and without fault for five years will be given and increase of twenty five pence per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves.

A bush teacher would also be expected to

· Wallpaper the residence with newspapers to keep out the winter winds and snakes.

· Stay fresh all day from a weekly swim in the dam.

· Teach a class of children aged five to fifteen.

· Ride a horse side saddle four miles to school and maybe carry a couple of pupils.

· Fight off swaggies who attempted to camp in the school.

· Keep the school property free of goats and cattle.

· Set a broken leg in a crisis.

· Patch the shingles on the school roof.

· Cook lunch in an open fire.

Life as a bush school teacher in Australia in 1872 was a true test of endurance, character, and dedication. Teachers were expected to live by a demanding code of conduct while managing every aspect of school life — from chopping firewood and fetching water to teaching children of all ages in remote, isolated conditions. Their commitment went far beyond the classroom, often serving as the heart of small rural communities. Though the rules may seem harsh or amusing today, they reflect a time when education relied on sheer determination and community spirit.

It is not every day that a tour ends with poetry.

But that is exactly what happened on our Kalbarri Wildflowers Tour - September 2025!

Our Tour Leader - Matt Walker, put pen to paper and captured the whole journey — from pelicans and pink lakes to wildflower carpets and laughter-filled moments.

It is a heartfelt, funny, and beautifully written reflection of a truly memorable Villa adventure and one we are pleased to share with you.

It rained at the Gravity Centre, our plans went astray,

No flowers to wander, no bright bush display,

But we poked at a meteor, laughed at the fun,

A space-rock adventure—the trip had begun!

Through Pinnacles’ desert, all jagged and bare,

Like limestone swamp trees, all frozen mid-stare,

An alien landscape, both eerie and stark,

Like walking on Mars in the desolate dark.

In Cervantes we dined and the sweets made us roar,

Our dessert by the lottery—who could want more?

And breakfast next morning was sheer delight,

Though someone lost clothing—by day or by night?

Villa’s tea in Port Denison—bikkies stacked high,

Enough for an army, you just had to try!

We paused at the HMAS Sydney Memorial, still,

The dome of souls and the stele on Geraldton’s hill.

Then off to the foreshore through showers we parted,

Lunch turned to chatter and warm drinks started.

All aboard “now hands up if you’re not here!”

“Anyone missing?”— the tour leader’s cheer.

Onto Northampton of footy fame we coasted,

Lush green hills and valleys the land about boasted

At Hutt Lagoon’s shoreline the waters were pink,

Like strawberry milkshake you’d think twice to drink.

Kalbarri then called through the showers of rain,

Where warm, cosy lodgings brought comfort again.

We met Naughty Boy the pelican cheeky and sly,

Who hustled and performed with a gleam in his eye!

We cruised the Murchison steady and slow,

With sea-eagles wheeling and red cliffs aglow,

While Tracey served lunch and Grant told the lore,

Of river birds, fishes and sandstone and more.

The coastline rose rugged, the viewpoints were plenty,

dramatic cliffs stood a hundred metres and twenty.

On cliff trails we found flowers, bright gems of the scene,

And whales far offshore—though not always seen!

The morning revealed no cool air in sight—

A nut had gone missing, a bolt wasn’t tight!

Neil found the fault and Mike lent a hand,

Our heroes of travel, the best in the land.

The crown of the tour was the day in the park,

With retired Ranger Mike—what a bright spark!

His passion and knowledge were truly a light,

He knew the full story of every plant in sight.

Seventeen years for the Skywalk to stand,

A bridge to the sky, a dream of the land,

And flowers like carpets, a riot, a flame,

Too many to number, too many to name.

Now rolling to Perth with our memories sure,

Tired but happy, content and secure,

And if there’s a wonder you missed on the way,

Fear not, another adventure is not far away—

So don’t be disheartened, no need for temper,

The adventure begins as we head east to Northam, the first stop on the PUBLIC Silo Art Trail. Here the painted silos stand as towering landmarks setting the tone for a colourful journey ahead.
